Royal & Sun Alliance is one of the world's leading multinational insurance groups. Our focus is predominantly upon general insurance but we do have a small number of life operations. We have leading or significant market positions in the UK, Scandinavia and Canada. At the end of 2003 we employed around 32,000 people. We currently transact business in some 130 countries and have some 20 million customers around the globe. We have an A- (strong) credit rating from Standard & Poor's and an A- (excellent) credit rating from A.M. Best.
Our primary focus is on commercial and personal general insurance coverages and we write virtually all types with an emphasis on property, casualty, motor and household insurance. In some countries, principally in Scandinavia, we also offer a range of life insurance and asset accumulation products as well as savings and pensions products. In addition, we conduct complementary businesses in support of our insurance operations such as risk management services including claims management and loss control services in our major markets around the globe.
Our business purpose is to help our customers around the world protect themselves against the risks they face in their businesses and daily lives by providing insurance and investment related solutions to meet their individual needs - as we have done for nearly 300 years. To enable customers to deal with us in whatever way suits them best we adopt a multi-channel distribution strategy and a region based organisational structure.
In September 2003 we announced the restructuring of our US business including a renewal rights deal with Travellers Indemnity Company for our standard personal lines business and the majority of our commercial lines business.
Our focus on fewer businesses in fewer markets will clearly have a significant impact on our overall business going forward. We are becoming smaller but we will seek to remain a substantial international insurer capitalising on profitable growth in those markets in which we remain.
